Outdoor Survival Skills

Malaysia has the most significant tropical jungle. A place where we Malaysian should proud of. If you haven't been any spot of these jungle/forest, you should take the geographical advantage to visit them. Tourists have travelled thousand of miles from all over the world, pay thousand of dollars for the transportation fee to here to challenge the mountains or to adventure in these jungle. So, i don't find any reason why we should skip these wonderful places. Of course, to do these, it does demand some minimum physical strength. What's more, a fit person does look great & confident!

Over the pass few months, there have been some cases about missing during jungle trekking or mountain climbing or even a walk in the forest. Fortunately most of the missing challengers are able to be rescued. It does happened that there are victims in these tragedy too.

To avoid yourself contributed in the statistic of such missing case, personal survival skills is an essential for your own safety. Knowledge of surviving in these extreme environment can be found on the net. I was boy scout during my secondary school. I learned these skills during the troop camping. Skills range from commando training(physical), backswoodman cooking (no modern cooking utensils), navigation skills, and the most important thing, the mental preparation for it. I would like to highlight some of them here. hope it could helps.

  • You may pick up the dried tree branches for fire lighthing in the night. It provide you warm and also create the "camp-fire" environment for the chat session. Please be advised that fire MUST BE put off when nobody is in guard. This is to avoid forest fire.

  • Learn yourself the knowledge of knowing poisonous plants & animals. Normally those poison stuffs are colourful. You may use trap to capture small animals or fishes.

  • Try obtaining drinking water. Water flows from higher ground to lower one. The source of the water will be the cleanest one.

  • Using the leaves, branches, bamboo to build temporary shelter from the rain.

  • Reduce activities in the dark to avoid being a target of fearless creatures.

  • Leave survival signs on the groud by grouping leaves, puzzling the stones, marking on the tree's trunk, using the sticks to form an arrow that shoing the direction you are heading and any other method that will attract attention to others.

Lastly, remember not to get walking in the jungle with your wetted boot/shoe. Here is the most important part of this short article. I would like to share a special skill with you. By using your empty 1.5l plastic water bottle, it can be made a wonderful slipper. Check it out!!!

You Raise Me Up!

Been watching TV no 3 & no 8 often these days. I'm touched when i hear a guy singing this song with the lyric "...You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains, You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas, and I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up... to more than I can be...." This morning, with helps from friends, i finally got this song downloaded. It is sang by Josh Groban.

(The player is at the top of the page. Click on the "Play" button to start the song. File size is 1.13MB, may take some time on slower bandwidth.)

At this moment, nothing more i can say but i would like to dedicate this song to my beloved parent & to all of you. Hope you all love this song too.

Watch with "Water Resistant"

Recently there are questions from friends about the watches with "Water Resistant". Some of them are proud of the watch which stated "Water resistant 100m". 100m is A LOT, even the maximum depth that a recreational scuba diver can go is just 40m!

Hmm, this is really not true when i have read thru several articles. In real life, my close friend did a scuba dive with his digital watch with "100m water resistant". We went only to the depth of 20m+ his watch shows 88:88:88. When the time we surfaced, the watch back to normal. Few hours after the dive only realised the water has actually penetrate into the watch.

To clear the confusion of "Water resistant XXXm", i should summarized that only the watch with the "Diver's 200m..." or "Professional 200m..." (depth vary depending on model) is meant for scuba diving. Because these watches are made to met the ISO standards of "water resistant".

For more detailed info, check out my previous artical about "Water Resistant".

Team Works - (点Works?)

This is the Discovery Professional Cycling Team's action in Le Tour de France 2005 stage 4 team time trial(TTT) covering 67.5KM from Tours to Blois. This team has broke the fastest record set 10 years ago. The average speed is 57.31KM/h

Rambo or lone ranger may not achieve this result. This shows that by working together as a team nothing is impossible to be achieved. Even the 10 years records set by the Gewiss team in 1995.

Just for your information, the team leader of the Discovery team is a cancer survivor. He diagnosed in 1996 and back to the competitive level the year after. He is the 6 times winner of Tour de France since 1999, the world most famous cycling race. He have been helping to raise fund for the cancer foundations by his LiveStrong yellow wristband.
