The Snake Bite Hash Run
The snake bite (not anaconda!)
Date : 25, sept 2004
Venue : Rubber estate, Ulu Yam Lama.
Weather : Rainy Afternoon
A rainy afternoon, a friend fetched us to Ulu Yam Lama for a Saturday hash run. Today is a privilege day for us as my friend is driving his brand new Volvo XC sport wagon. It is a luxury, powerful, spacious, and safety car. And the best part of it, the owner took us with his new toy into the jungle for its virgin off road experience. Just so fun.
1600, we reached the destination. It is a old rubber estate. The moment we step down from the car, it is like those blood donation campaign. Damn load of mosquitoes, just so irritating. So many hashers turning up today, some even with their “Human’s best friend – Dog” . Rottweiler, Diberman, and etc these furkids are so strong!
1625, the run going to start in 5 mins, about 40-50 hasher are all ready to be roll in to the estate. Today, there are 2 types of run, short & a long one. Most of them are talking about the run one as the estimated distance is 18km off road. Reason being is most of the hashers are preparing for the 2nd OCT 2004 Hash Challenge. A 42km off road trail running. To cover the entire distance, these tracks are carefully planned that required hasher’s 8-10 hours to finish it. It is a challenge in team basis. Each team consists of 4 member where 1 of the member must be opposite sex with the others. So everybody is taking this run as a warm up event for the big one.
1630, run started. At the initial part, every body takes sweet time, walking in. Some of the hashers already start running. We ran up, down, up and down the rubber estate, crossing bamboo’s tree crossing rivers. Those hashers that bring dogs along are just so awesome, their dog keep accompany their master along the way. Never leave them behind. It is like personal bodyguard. Very nice experience having dog to accompany it’s master for this activities.
About 1.5 hours, something bad happen, 1 of the lead hashers got bitten by snake!!! And at that area is the splitting point for short & long run. Most of the hashers choose the short one, because they just worry about the incident. Only handy of brave hearts chosen to take the long one, that’s included me ;) We continue it carefully, and never try to hold any tree-branches. According to the experienced hashers, he never sees such incident before, as most of the them those creatures will try to hide themselves or run away before it is being seen by human being. In the incident earlier on, probably is the hasher miss touch it and the natural reaction of such creature is to defense themselves by taking the attack.
1900, the surrounding is getting dark! less then 15 hashers gather at a “check” for 40 minutes, because all of us are unable to retrieve the way out from the estate! Some of the hashers are getting panic because of the dark forest is getting darker and darker! Among us, only ME alone that carries mobile phone! We called out to the people out there for help. And 1 of the hasher that set this trail directed us the area for us to escape from the “trap”. Everybody stick closely with each other and we walk back to the starting point safely! The group also thanks me because of my Seimens C60 mobile phone that brings all of us back safely!
2030, after a cup of refreshing 100plus, we call off the event and heading back to KL with the Volvo XC car. That is my amazing event experience that stuck in the middle of the rubber estate.
